Visit from Hieroku High School — 23rd January 2006

  • More than 200 students made a one-day visit to Sekolah Seri Suria
  • Mrs Manogharan our Senior Principal and her counterpart exchanged pleasantries at the start of the visit
  • The visitors and hosts were paired into groups for games and language classes
  • Friendly matches were played, both indoors and outdoors
  • Lunch followed. While most of the guests adapted well to our Malaysian food, some were treading cautiously amongst the wide array of dishes
  • After lunch, it was social time. Students exchanged contacts and e-mails
  • It was truly an exciting experience

The Home-stay Programme

There are some interesting accounts of the home-stay experirence:

Alvin Loke hosted Araki Shingo:
"Right after school, we went home and played some games. Gosh! Japanese are good at games. Later, we visited a golf course. He was so thrilled that he loaded his digital camera with photos. We then headed for Petaling Street. Obviously, the fashion there didn't excite him. Boy! The souvenirs did. He went berserk over the varieties of sunglasses. Our next destination was the KLCC. Although the park there looked so pleasant and peaceful, he was too tired to enjoy it. We therefore headed for home. Durians? Yes he did try. Well that would be his last bite on the fruit. The next day, he had some roti canai and fresh coconut. 'Great!' was his response. It was a really enjoyable experience. How I wish the time was longer."

Lee Boon Han hosted Shinnichi Okada:
"Well, I had a great time with Okadasan. Within a span of 24 hours, I managed to show him the KLCC, KL Tower and a walk through our Pasar Malam, amongst other places. We took plenty of photographs together and played many games. Of all these, the part I enjoyed most was the communication. I do not understand a word of Japanese and his English was simply atrocious. I sometimes wonder how we survived during those 24 hours together. By nature he is a quiet boy with a happy disposition. I really hope we have the chance to meet again. This programme is really worthwhile. I only hope we had more time."

Seow Szelin hosted Chikura Masako:
"Before I even start relating this story, I want to say how I 'extremely miss you, Chikura'. As have expected, she enjoyed shopping, just like me. Naturally, I brought her to Tesco and the Midvalley. The next fun thing was the food experience. We had fed her with a good variety of dim sum, mamak breakfast, chicken rice, asam laksam, ABC, and local fruits. She was so taken up by the variety that she kept taking pictures of the food rather than eating them. She was very impressed with my mother's home cooked meal. However, Chikura can't take spicy food and durian definitely 'smells funny'. The experience together with my family (especially my brother and I) was really fun and unforgettable."

Jesslyn Thia hosted Yuge Haruna:
"I had a great time hanging out with Haruna. She is a very polite and obliging girl. To all the local food like, roti canai, nasi lemak, rambutan and even durian, she would say, 'oyshi, oyshi', meaning tasty. Although we had a tough time communicating, it never came in the way of fun and excitement. She even carried a dictionary with her. She learnt a lot about us and we also benefited from her stories about Japanese life. Haruna demonstrated the Japanese 'tea ceremony' to our delight. Our only regret was the short time allocated to each other. We hope she would visit us again someday or maybe we would visit her in Japan."

Leong Zhen Yu hosted Matsuo Kiyotaka:
"There is only one word to describe him 'EATING'. This boy was enjoying everything from roti canai to even, durians! I brought him to the local night market, mamak stalls and the KLCC. I got to know some of the Japanese lifestyles. The exchange of cultures between Japan and Malaysia was exciting and fulfilling. This programme was great and thoroughly enriching and perhaps once in a lifetime experience for me."

Chin Poi Kuan hosted Haruka Orima:
"I brought her to the Midvalley, a night market and tasted all sorts of Malaysian delicacies. We made prints for exchange. We missed each other greatly. As a matter of fact, we cried uncontrollably during the parting time. It was a great experience. No regrets."

Ng Jian Hui hosted Aiichiro Eto:
"I brought him to the Mines, KLCC and Petaling Street. Eto is a quiet boy. None the less, I got to know more about the Japanese culture and lifestyle. In return I shared the Malaysian way of life with him. The time spent together was really enjoyable."
