2010 News & Events
6th Selangor Junior Judo Championship

On the 23rd of May 2010, Sekolah Seri Suria (SSS) played host to the 6th Selangor Junior Judo Championship. This major tournament attracted junior-level judo exponents from all across the state, who represented their respective primary and secondary schools. This championship is regarded as a stepping stone or launching pad for talented aspirants of the sport who wish to exhibit their judo skills on a bigger stage in the future. In fact, several of the participants were already sporting Selangor colours and badges on their 'judogi' (or traditional judo uniform).

On this warm and sunny Sunday morning, it was somewhat of a relief that the event was held indoors at Sekolah Seri Suria's air-conditioned Hall of Character. Parents, participants and tournament officials began to arrive early at the venue and the junior exponents took the opportunity to do their warm-ups and execute some last-minute practice sessions.

Judo Awards and Medals for the Champion Fighters!

By 9am sharp, the competition commenced. Exponents from various age groups and weight categories then started to take turns slugging it out on the giant floor mat, each displaying character qualities of 'honor', 'endurance' and 'determination' in their quest to become champions. The most entertaining duels of the day came from the little judo kids between the ages of seven and nine, who tickled the crowd with their gutsy fighting spirit and very 'unique' brand of judo (which basically involved moving around in circles a lot).

The event then broke off for a one-hour lunch interval at noon. A wide buffet spread of tasty local dishes and snacks was then served to the crowd who duly tucked in. By 1pm, the competition restarted and the now 'fully-nourished' exponents continued to display their judo prowess until the field was narrowed down to the final stage for each category.

Judo Fighting

After a series of tense but exciting final match-ups, the champions for each class were finally decided. Then at approximately 4.30pm, the closing ceremony went underway - beginning with a short speech by Mr.Mohan Ramakrishnan, President of the Selangor Judo Association (SJA), and followed by another brief speech by Ms.Olive Beverley Tan, Principal of REAL International School Suria. Both of these esteemed guests - along with Mr.Peter Ting, Marketing Manager of Sekolah Seri Suria - then proceeded to award the medals to the winners.

The highlight and most anticipated moment of the day came when Sekolah Seri Suria was presented with the much-coveted 'Challenge Trophy', for being overall champions of the tournament with a final tally (and biggest haul) of seven gold, seven silver and eleven bronze medals. The entire event finally concluded at about 5.30pm and for the host - Sekolah Seri Suria, it was a very proud day indeed in more ways than one!
