Interview with Artistic Gymnast Coach

Coach: Ng Shu Wai
Age: 23

History: In 1995, Shu Wai took up gymnast at the age of 12 years old when his mother persuaded him. By 1999, he joined the Malaysia Gymnastic National Team.

Best Achievement as an athlete:

  1. Ng Shu Wai won 3 individual gold medals and one team gold medal in Men’s Artistic Gymnastics in the 23rd SEA Games, making him the highest gold medal winner among the Malaysian male athletes. The gold medals he won are the Individual All-around, Individual Floor, and Individual High Bar, plus the Artistic Team event.  This is the first time a male Gymnast has won more than 2 gold medals in the SEA Games.
  2. He is the first Malaysian male Gymnastic to qualify for an Olympic Games, having participated in the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.
  3. He became the first Malaysian to win Silver for the 2006 Asian Games
  4. He won the Silver for the 2002 and 2006 Commonwealth Games

Coaching career:
Shu Wai is a full-time coach for Sekolah Seri Suria. Initially, he thought coaching was easy until he does it. It is in fact quite challenging because there are a lot of preparations such as customizing training or program to fit the students need, provide nutrition advice, prevent injury and many more. However, he said it is fun to train and mold more successful future gymnast like him and he do it for his passion of the sport. He is supported by the Malaysia Sports Council and was sent to take the coach’s diploma course in Hungary. With this certification, he is a qualified gymnastic coach.
Currently, he is training all Suria’s preschool students and Junior 1 to 4. Shu Wai has produced many students of Sekolah Seri Suria to win medals in various school and district events.
He also started private classes for students who want to excel in the sport.

Professional Goals:
To train more students to be national player and participate in international events.

Advice for interested student:

  1. To start gymnast at an early age such as 6-9 years old.
  2. Students must have a good body shape with long hands and leg.
  3. Consistency in training as it is recommended to do at least 3 hours of training on a daily basis.
  4. Must have good character such as discipline, patience, positive mindset and determine.

How to recommend potentials students to national level?
Every year there is a selection process and potential students should participate in it.
